Ekaterina Shelehova was born in 1995 in Kaliningrad,
Russia. Her love of singing was apparent early, and at
the age of two and a half she was involved in radio
commercial. By the age of five, Kate was singing solo
and with an ensemble of singers from her music school
at numerous municipal and regional concerts and
Festivals, and had recorded her first CD. At the same
time, Kate was involved in gymnastics, in which
she placed top in Kaliningrad as well as an international
competition in Vilnius, Lithuania, where she received her
first gold medal in gymnastics. At the age of six she
won the top vocal prize in the Baltic Razguliai Festival
in the up to 16-year-old age group. That year she also
won the top prize in the Russian Hopes Festival.
Since moving to Canada in 2002, Kate has
continued to pursue singing with dedication and
determination. Since 2002 she has won numerous
gold and silver medals in voice at festivals and
competitions including Kiwanis, the Burlington Rotary
Festival, Festival Niagara and others. She has also
won awards for her piano studies, and has twice
received recognition as the top provincial voice
candidate in her grade through the Royal Conservatory
of Music Examinations system.
Besides performances in concert across Southern
Ontario, Kate has performed as a soloist with Opera
Belcanto and StageToneScape, including a role as the
First Spirit in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with Opera
Ontarioin 2007. She has also performed in the chorus in
productions of Tosca, I Pagliacci, Cavalleria Rusticana,
La Traviata, and Carmen.
Kate was accepted into the Young Artists Performance Academy in the fall of 2011, and studies with
Jean MacPhail. She is a 2012-13 Academy recipient of The Janette Alana Montgomery
Endowment Scholarship, and The John McKnight Memorial Scholarship.
Besides singing, Kate is currently working on her ARCT piano teacher’s diploma and loves
reading, horseback riding and downhill skiing.
